Innovative Sensor Integration for Remote Landmine Detection
REMOTE LANDMINE DETECTION

Project NATO SPS G-7563

What are our
goals?

Our primary goal is to advance humanitarian demining efforts, particularly focusing on post-war recovery in Ukraine, by developing an innovative robotic solution that significantly improves upon traditional manual detection methods. We aim to create and field-demonstrate a versatile robotic platform capable of operating with four interchangeable sensor configurations: an AI surface threat detector with tripwire detection capabilities, an impulse GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar), a metal detector array, and a Holographic Subsurface Radar (HSR) array. Through this project, we seek to achieve Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 by validating our system in certified test fields, while implementing effective sensor data storage and fusion techniques. Our solution is designed to be both practical and sustainable, utilizing a Mechatronic Modular Interface that can be fabricated using durable and recyclable materials in any country, ensuring its viability in harsh environments. Ultimately, we strive to create a plug-and-play system that enhances safety and efficiency in landmine detection while providing a scalable solution for the decades-long challenge of post-war land rehabilitation.

Impact

Our project addresses one of the most pressing challenges in post-conflict recovery: the safe and efficient detection of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXOs). The impact of our innovative robotic solution extends far beyond technological advancement. By replacing traditional manual detection methods, which could take decades to complete, with our advanced robotic system, we can significantly accelerate the process of making lands safe again for civilian use. The modular and adaptable nature of our solution ensures wide accessibility, as the system can be fabricated using local materials in any country, promoting technological independence and sustainability. Furthermore, our project contributes to the advancement of humanitarian demining by integrating cutting-edge technologies in robotics, sensors, communication, and AI, creating a comprehensive detection system that meets humanitarian demining standards. The successful implementation of this project will not only enhance the safety of demining operations but also accelerate the restoration of safe living conditions for populations affected by conflict, ultimately contributing to faster community recovery and rehabilitation.
